Basket weave stitch is popular stitch pattern. It is simple yet clever looking, attractive without being ostentatious. This pattern uses five purl stitches in a block. Easy to knit and great practice for beginning knitters.
Cast on a multiple of 8 stitches plus 5 additional stitches.
Row 1 - right side: Knit.
Row 2: Knit 5, * purl 3, knit 5; repeat from * to end.
Row 3: Purl 5, * knit 3, purl 5; repeat from * to end.
Row 4: Knit 5, * purl 3, knit 5; repeat from * to end.
Row 5: Knit.
Row 6: Knit 1, * purl 3, knit 5; repeat from * to last 4 sts, purl 3, knit 1.
Row 7: Purl 1, * knit 3, purl 5; repeat from * to last 4 sts, knit 3, purl 1.
Row 8: Knit 1, * purl 3, knit 5; repeat from * to last 4 sts, purl 3, knit 1.
Repeat Rows 1 - 8.
